Hassan Govia and Chiedza Rwodzi met while training at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Along with fellow alumni Cristal Cole, they decided to co-found Unshaded Arts after discovering a mutual desire to embed overlooked narratives within mainstream theatre. Hassan and Chiedza aim to develop work that challenges the status quo, cultivates sustainable change and amplifies unsung voices and talent.

HASSAN GOVIA

Growing up in North West London to British born parents of Kittitian and Pakistani heritage, the idea of being a minority rarely affected Hassan until his foray into higher education, both at university and drama school. His experiences in the latter compelled him to conduct a solo project examining the continued problems surrounding diversity for black British actors, with the findings exposing the difficulty for actors of colour to progress in an industry that does not favour their perspective. Resultantly, he was stirred to create and be involved in work that redresses the imbalance of opportunities for those marginalised by their ethnicity or otherwise.

He graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA in English, subsequently gaining a Masters degree from Mountview. That said, he is primarily a self-taught multidisciplinary artist, and is hopeful that Unshaded Arts will be a successful platform for his writing alongside aiding the development of his directorial skills.

CHIEDZA RWODZI

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Chiedza is a freelance creative who moved to the UK in 2011, graduating from Regents University with a Business Management degree before completing her Masters at Mountview. She is passionate about affording opportunities to all backgrounds to find a voice through the arts, particularly those lacking direct access to theatre. In light of this, her Masters' dissertation focused on the relevance of theatre in bringing about positive change within communities.

Aside from her experiences as an actress, Chiedza has led drama workshops for young people in her native town, as well as completing an internship at the Finborough Theatre, which gave her vital experience regarding the internal operations of a leading off-West end venue. She is also completing her professional training as a life coach, and intends to use her developing expertise in this area for the benefit of artists who directly engage with Unshaded Arts.
